October 2009
Through physician volunteers on its Public
Health Issues Committee, Doctors Manitoba is very active in health promotion,
lobbying, and professional and public education. We also encourage,
assess and respond to legislative initiatives in the realm of health
care and promotion.
For example, Doctors Manitoba took the lead in
lobbying aggressively and successfully for smoking bans in all indoor
public places and workplaces province-wide.
More recently, we have continued to promote physical activity among all
Manitobans, with a current emphasis on active transportation. In addition, we are
lobbying for legislation to make bicycle helmets mandatory, to prohibit smoking in vehicles carrying
children, and to ban cell phone use while driving.
Other health care issues Doctors Manitoba has brought to the forefront of
public attention over the years are numerous and diverse. Some past
examples relate to fetal alcohol syndrome, seatbelt use, motorcycle and
bicycle helmet use, graduated driver licensing, health care directives,
organ donation, gambling addiction, and the association between SIDS
and sleeping position.
